Don’t waste your time

Time is precious, yet we often behave as if it's limitless. Wasting time is a common phenomenon in our society. We mindlessly scroll through our phones, unaware of the passing hours. I struggled with social media addiction for a long time, so I know what I'm talking about. Most of the time I spent on social media was nonsensical, like scrolling through Instagram or watching YouTube shorts. This might seem harmless initially, but spending two hours without a break in such activities is indeed a waste of time. I label scrolling as time-wasting because it doesn't engage your brain constructively. Instead, it overstimulates your dopamine receptors, contributing to social media addiction.

Another consequence of bingeing on social media, particularly shorts or reels, is a shortened attention span. This makes it challenging to focus on tasks for extended periods. Studying becomes nearly impossible when your mind keeps drifting. From personal experience, I can attest that I became happier and more productive when I reduced my social media usage. I adopted a structured daily plan and replaced excessive social media time with reading or working on tasks. Upon completing my tasks, I felt a sense of accomplishment, unlike the emptiness that followed wasting hours on my phone. Every time I became aware of my lengthy scrolling sessions, I felt remorse, guilt, and a sense of wasted potential.

An example of wasting a sunday morning

You don’t have to delete social media entirely, but consider reducing your usage. You may be surprised by how much time you waste each day. Check your phone's screen time to see how long you spend on various apps. Mindlessly scrolling through social media has become a habit for many, consuming hours without purpose. I despise the feeling of wasting time and am always ashamed when I spend hours on meaningless activities. The problem with social media and short content is that people binge-watch countless videos per day, often forgetting the content shortly after viewing.

Next time you're tempted to scroll endlessly, use a timer and remember your initial intention. By doing so, you'll recognize when you're over-consuming and prevent mindless scrolling.
